ξ-quartet-ρηξ
(ksi-quartet)
[unity]
for four string players and one cello (string quartet)

The fundamental premise of my unity-zyklus of works is an attempt to destroy/fragment a traditional work-concept and to then attempt to unify the ensemble in the act of reconstructing the original coherent identity. ξ-quartet-ρηξ (ksi-quartet, “torn”) drives this concept to a logistical extremity, with the four performers of the quartet operating on a single cello. By establishing this initial setting, I am able to develop an economy of personnel through the attempt(s) to both reassemble the quartet (as a genre) and the solo cello (both as a way of playing and as a genre of piece) – the resultant possibilities including issues of technical realization and communication, the failure to produce a unified identity and the uncanny valleys that may arise at the successful production of a unified voice, and the quartet’s own relationship to their intrinsic roles through the physical space of the ‘cellist of the quartet (empathy of personnel).
